California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 2001: California State University: burial sites: human remains.

Assembly Member Ramos's proposal to establish dedicated burial sites for repatriated Native American remains within the California State University (CSU) system would create new protocols for handling these culturally significant materials. The legislation requires CSU to identify available land and designate three burial locations across northern, central, and southern California.

Under the proposed policy, CSU must conduct public hearings and consult with California Indian tribes to develop procedures for the burial sites. When Native American remains are repatriated to tribes under federal or state law, CSU would facilitate burials at these designated locations upon tribal request, following the tribe's customs and rituals.

The measure builds upon existing requirements that mandate CSU's compliance with the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 2001, which governs the inventory and return of Native American remains and cultural items. While the bill creates new obligations for the university system to establish and maintain burial sites, it does not include additional state funding for implementation.
